The Impact Of Socioeconomic Status On Educational Outcomes

My Experience With Socioeconomic Status Growing Up

From 1972-1985, I was a latch-key kid. My younger sister and I would be the only ones at home before and after school while our parents worked (one worked in town and the other was away for extended periods of time).

We always had food, clothing, and extra-curricular activities. Some of our friends did not have these things. Once in middle school, the socioeconomic disparities between our family and some of my friends’ families became more apparent.

Two of my best friends had larger families and, therefore, less to go around. Any time I would go to their homes, snacks were not available, they were not involved in organized sports or activities, and often we would do the family chores together like hand-washing the copious amounts of dishes.

The boys shared a bedroom as did the girls in these families and I often wondered how my friends ever got to enjoy any alone time. By the end of each month, my friends and their siblings were showing up at school with smaller and smaller lunches until it was payday again.

The Impact Of Socioeconomic Status In 2026 On Students’ Education

This reality for many families has not gone away but rather exponentially increased over the past 40 years. An increasing number of students arrive at school without adequate clothing, food, or basic school supplies. These disparities directly affect learning conditions.

It is often the students who come from families with lower socioeconomic status who struggle the most. These students’ families are struggling to make ends meet so their children’s access to high-quality educational resources is often an afterthought.

While larger and systemic solutions need to be created, these disparities are part of the reason why I created the K-6 Learning Library which is full of unit and lesson plans at affordable prices for both teachers and parents alike.

How We’re Here To Help

The unit and lesson plans in our K-6 Learning Library can help your K-6 child or students develop confidence and proficiency in both English Language Arts & Literature and Mathematics in a straightforward and engaging way.

They are designed to foster self-efficacy and confidence. The best part is that you can edit these resources so that your child or students can focus on what they can do right now and build on it, rather than internalize that they are not performing at grade level.

All of our resources include engaging instructional videos, audio functions, and high-definition images. These resources can be used both digitally and non-digitally at home or at school.

As a small business, we are proud to keep our prices for high-quality digital and non-digital classroom educational resources fair and equitable for teachers and parents alike.

If you want to fully preview all unit and lesson plans, you can do so on our Teachers Pay Teachers page!
